South Solitary Island Helicopter Tour 2019
This winter, fly over South Solitary Island with Precision Helicopters and enjoy an exclusive tour of this remote and historic island. This experience is only available to a handful of lucky visitors on two weekends a year.
The best part? You’ll be visiting in the middle of the whale watching season, so there’s a good chance you’ll get a magical view of the humpback highway in full flight from the helicopter and the island itself.
South Solitary Island is an idyllic spot near Coffs Harbour in NSW, with historic lighthouse keepers’ quarters built in 1880. The site was abandoned in 1975 and is now part of a successful conservation program by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
There are three tour options available:
- A 1-hour tour of the lightstation and keepers’ quarters.
- A 2-hour tour of the lightstation and keepers’ quarters, with time to walk to the Gantry.
All guided tours are led by NPWS rangers, who share stories about the history of the lighthouse and its place in European maritime heritage. One of the guides is a local Gumbaynggirr Elder, who can explain the significance of the island for local Aboriginal people.
If you’re lucky, you’ll have a previous resident of the island join your tour to share their first-hand experience of living and working on the island when it was a thriving lightstation community.
While you’re there, make sure you climb the spiral staircase of the lightstation to enjoy panoramic views across the island. NPWS rangers will have powerful viewing scopes and binoculars, so you can spot whales and learn more about their behaviour and biology.
Part of the proceeds of the tour go towards the maintenance of the historic island, so it can be enjoyed by future generations. There are limited spots available, so if you want to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience, book now.
